Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot peace deal brokered

After a long deliberation and meeting that lasted more than 4 hours, both the dominant leaders of the Rajasthan Congress, Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot finally agreed to work together for the upcoming State elections in Rajasthan followed by the Parliamentary Elections in 2024. The meeting was presided by the All India Congress Committee President Mallikarjun Kharge who is said to have brokered the deal.

Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot – Longtime enemies

Both the Congress torchbearers in Rajasthan were involved in a bitter feud for power for quite a few years now, but the lowest point reached was during the State elections that took place 5 years ago where the Congress ousted the Vasundhara Raje-led BJP from power to gain control of the state. However, the win was marred by a bitter rivalry between Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot for the post of CM, which finally saw Ashok Gehlot preside over the CM chair.

What the truce would mean for the Congress Party

The win by Congress in the Karnataka State elections has given a new lease of life to not only the grass root level workers in the Congress party but also resonated with the highest ranks as well. Congress is now thinking of regrouping itself as a part of their preparation for the State Elections in Rajasthan which is supposed to happen later this year followed by the Parliament Elections next year.

Going by the phrase “United we Stand”, Congress has realized that infighting among the factions within the party could only result in strengthening the Opponent, especially when elections are just around the corner. Hence, working on a compromise to reduce the infighting within the party is more of a prerequisite to preparing for the Elections, be it in the State or the Country.

“Both leaders have unanimously decided to work together and left the decision on the high command,” senior party leader KC Venugopal said after the four-hour meeting. No details of the ‘peace pact’ or division of responsibilities for the upcoming elections were offered.
