Zika Virus in Pune: Third Case Found In 67-Year-Old Male

On Friday, the health department said that a 67-year-old male in the Bavdhan neighbourhood of Pune, Maharashtra, had tested positive for the Zika virus in Pune. He is a Nashik resident who moved to Pune on November 6, reports news agency ANI. The patient checked into Jahangir Hospital on the 16th of November complaining of fatigue, fever, a cough, and soreness in their joints. On November 18, a diagnosis of infection with the Zika virus was given for him by a private laboratory.

Maharashtra Health Department on New Case

The Maharashtra health department issued the following statement in an official capacity “A case of Zika virus in Pune city of Maharashtra reported. A 67-year-old man patient was found in Bavdhan Pune city, he is originally from Nashik and had come to Pune on November 6, earlier on October 22 he had travelled to Surat.” “On November 30, NIV confirmed that Zika virus infection in him. Currently, the patient is clinically stable and has no complications.”

With this case of a 67-year-old male, the state reported a total of 3 cases of Zika Virus in Pune. The second last case is of a 7-year-old girl and one more in the previous year’s July month. In an effort to prevent further outbreaks of the Zika virus, the local authorities in Pune have given the go-ahead for an entomological inspection of the city. Within the city, more investigative work is now being carried out. Some of the symptoms of the Zika virus include a minimal fever, rashes, conjunctivitis, malaise, and headaches. Other symptoms include discomfort in the muscles and joints.

Zika Virus: Where It Originated

The Zika virus was first identified in 1947 in a monkey that was found in Uganda. Its first outbreak occurred in Micronesia in 2007, and then it exploded throughout Latin America in 2015, particularly in Brazil. A virus that is predominantly carried by the Aedes mosquito is the root of the problem.
