Sharad Pawar resignation leaves supporters in tears

Sharad Pawar resignation leaves supporters in tears during the launch of his autobiography in an unexpected announcement. The move also had the allies of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in the Maha Vikas Agadhi (MVP) like Udhav Thackeray and Congress taken aback as well.

Sharad Pawar resignation – The end of an era

The 82-year-old politician and the founder of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) was probably the most famous figure in Maharashtra politics after Bal Thackeray in the last 6 decades. His political career started in 1960 when the state was bifurcated making way for the formation of the state of Gujarat, separating him from the state of Maharashtra.

As per the news, the only leader who appeared to accept the decision and talk about the future was Ajit Pawar, Sharad Pawar’s political heir, whose recent moves have triggered speculation that he may split the party and join hands with the BJP. That is believed to be the BJP’s Plan B if its Maharashtra ally, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, loses the Sena versus Sena case in the Supreme Court and is disqualified along with 15 other MLAs.

“Pawar Saheb himself had talked about the necessity for a change of guard a few days back. We should see his decision in the light of his age and health also. Everyone has to take a decision according to time, Pawar Saheb has taken a decision and he won’t take it back,” Ajit Pawar told party men.

Sharad Pawar resignation – The Impact

It is widely believed that ideological differences with nephew Ajit Pawar led him to this unfortunate decision of Sharad Pawar resignation. Ajit Pawar, the likely political heir of the party had been inclined to patch up with BJP which has been strongly opposed by his uncle. Sharad Pawar resignation was announced on camera, which provoked an outpouring of protests and support from his party MLAs.

The NCP’s allies in Maharashtra openly wished he would reconsider. The impact of an NCP shake-up after Sharad Pawar resignation will go beyond the party to the unimaginable, ideologically disparate alliance that Mr. Pawar strung together in 2019, enabling a Uddhav Thackeray-led coalition to come to power. Last year, Uddhav Thackeray lost power after a coup in his party led by Eknath Shinde, who tied up with the BJP.

The opposition coalition is on the shakier ground now, completely dependent as it is on Mr. Pawar, the glue. However, it remains to be seen if the request from his supporters and party MLAs does have an impact on the decision of Sharad Pawar resignation.
